My experience was during my 2019 thru-hike of the Appalachian trail, it was September 19 2019, it was an average day to hike nice weather, with clear skies I was looking to make camp for the evening, 6:45 pm I remember, the sounds around me went silent, then I could smell something that just was the worst smell ever, like a dead body, and a very powerful skunk smell, my senses told me something just wasn’t right, like fight or flight time, I noticed to my left I looked up through the dense forest, and to my surprise, what I seen was looking back at me, it had the most intense looking eyes looking directly at me, dark in color high eye brows oversized nose, large ears and lower jaw, it’s upper head was not at all round but like a large upside down V. I could hear it breathing heavy, the what sounded like a low growl, within an area of about 20 feet, this creature had an incredible massive shadow, then it just turned and began walking away, well I was surprised beyond belief trying to comprehend what I was seeing.

I dropped my pack and began running directly at it, it was moving at a good pace, not like a full out run, but it was quickly putting distance between me and it, I’m doing all out run to keep up, finally I got close enough again, and I yelled out HEY HEY, and what I experienced next was complete fear, could not move at all just froze with both my hands in front of me raised up as I’m doing this this massive creature turn towards me and made 2 very large steps and stopped dead in its tracks, it was like a wild bull elephant coming at you.

I next heard a deep angry sounding growl, and then a massive hand moving large branches out of its way, and now a really angry loud growl and a heavy snort, now I’m seeing this massive creature standing directly in front of me, distance between us both a close 10 feet, the god awful smell hit me again I held my breath and turned to my right making some distance between me and it, I turned around and what I saw will stay with me forever.

I was looking at something at least 8 to 8 1/2 feet in height, massive chest upper right shoulder and upper lower thigh I could see the large muscle structure of this creature. It was standing there in a normal fashion just looking down at me, it had a overall dark to light brown thick fur like a Kodiak bear, it’s head was massive with normal looking features eyes, high brows, ears large nose and lips with a large lower jaw, it looked like it had a thick short looking neck, like it could only look side to side at a 45 to maybe 60 degree movement, the look of the hand was massive in size with large thick heavy fingers and finger nails dark brown color but the inside palm had a smooth brownish grey color top of the hand and fingers had medium thickness look of fur.

It then looked up moving its eyes side to side then simply a grunt, turned and walked away. The whole encounter was a good 8 minutes total time. I went down on both knees, and just looked around me like what did I just experience, what I do know is my experience was real and I can say without a second thought this creature is very real.

I went back to where I dropped my backpack and did in fact see large footprints, each print was 22” in length and 8” wide and a inch deep, what I noticed was the distance from one footprint to the other was 38” which I was amazed. It’s something I have no interest in having a second encounter with.
